Wainwrights: Grizedale Pike, Hobcarton Crag, Hopegill Head, Eel Crag, Wandope
Elevation: 5,883ft
Distance: 14.9 miles
The route starts in Braithewaite, just outside Keswick, and starts with the long drag up to Grizedale Pike and the first Wainwright of the day. The top of Grizedale Pike was shrouded in cloud as we began our ascent and it looked like most of the day was going to be spent in the clag with no visibility.
As we climbed the clouds lifted and we were treated to some spectacular views of the fells for the remainder of the day. The forecast snow and sleet showers didn’t materialise apart from a bit of a downpour in the last 10 minutes on the descent back into Braithewaite.
The route can be broken up by a tea stop in Buttermere at the excellent tea rooms or you can just keep on going and join the Lakeland 100 route on leg 5 as we did and get back.
Any day out on the fells bagging Wainwrights works up an appitite so we all piled into the Dog and Gun in Keswick for some of their delicious Hungarian Goulash.
All in all, a great day out on the fells with friends.
